Black Lives Matter protesters in Washington surrounded a woman who refused to raise her fist in support of their cause, triggering a backlash.
In scenes which quickly went viral, a large crowd of overwhelmingly white protesters marched through the Adams Morgan neighbourhood, a short drive north of the White House, chanting “white silence is violence” with their fists in the air.
As they passed restaurants their diners raised their fists too, but Lauren Victor, eating outside at a Mexican restaurant, refused to do so, even after the woman she was dining with joined in.
Protesters surrounded her and shouted in her face. “Are you a Christian?”, one demanded to know.
