  • Record increase in Texas deaths as more states and cities issue broad mask guidelines

California on Wednesday overtook New York as the US state with the highest number of total coronavirus cases since the onset of the pandemic in March, while Texas’s daily death toll reached a record high.

The latest milestones in Texas and California, the two most populous states — both of which have seen cases rise sharply in recent weeks — came as the overall number of US cases grew at a near-record pace, topping 70,000 infections in the past 24 hours.

California on Wednesday reported 12,807 people had tested positive for Covid-19 over the past 24 hours, up from 9,231 a day earlier. That pushed the overall total of cases in California to 413,576 — past the 408,886 recorded in New York.

New York and its neighbouring northeastern states saw the biggest number of Covid-19 cases in the US during the early months of the outbreak but have since managed to bring the virus’s spread under control. The number of cases recorded on Wednesday in New York stood at 705.
