Coronavirus: don’t let guard down over Lunar New Year, health expert warns

Members of the public will be able to travel safely for Lunar New Year in February but holidaymakers should not let their guard down about the coronavirus and the outbreak in Hong Kong remains severe, according to a leading Chinese epidemiologist.

Zeng Guang, former chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, said the central government was confident that its epidemic controls would prevent major coronavirus outbreaks during Lunar New Year, when billions of journeys are expected to be made, Guangzhou Daily reported on Monday.

But Zeng also cautioned that people should still limit large indoor gatherings, wear masks and maintain good personal hygiene when travelling during the break, which next year runs from February 11 to February 26.

“Even though there is large-scale movement of people during the Spring Festival, everyone can be rest assured that they can go home this year,” Zeng was quoted as saying.
