Coronavirus: Family gatherings at Christmas may yet be banned

Families will be able to spend time together at Christmas only if Covid is brought under control, a senior minister warned today, describing it as a “common cause” for the whole country.

Stephen Barclay said that the government could not commit itself now to allow household mixing over the festive season, although he said that it was a key priority.

His comments came as Boris Johnson demanded improvement from his struggling test and trace system, with estimates suggesting that the daily infection rate may now be as high as 90,000.
