Coronavirus pandemic takes toll on children’s mental health

One in six children and young people is likely to have a mental health condition, an NHS study has found.

A respondent was defined as having a “probable” mental health problem if they were in the worst five per cent when answering a series of questions relating to mental health and wellbeing. The likelihood of a disorder increased with age, the survey found, particularly for girls.

England’s top paediatric mental health doctor urged people to seek help as the rate of probable mental health problems in children aged five to sixteen increased by 50 per cent in three years.
