Covid-19 outbreak at a palliative care ward at a Hong Kong public hospital appears to have expanded dramatically after 12 more patients and now staff tested preliminary-positive for the disease, health authorities said on Saturday as they confirmed 59 new cases.

Officials also revealed another person who had recently arrived from Britain was carrying the mutated virus strain spreading across England, while a new case emerged at a housing estate, triggering an order for all residents to undergo mandatory screening.

Of the latest infections, 53 were locally transmitted, of which 26 were untraceable, while the remaining six were imported. The official tally stands at 8,540 cases, with 136 related deaths.
