Paris police tear down 65th migrant camp in past five years

More than 2,000 migrants were bussed to temporary shelters in the Paris region yesterday after police pulled down their camp next to the French national stadium.

The operation angered mayors across the French capital whose council buildings and sports centres were requisitioned by President Macron’s government to house the migrants from Afghanistan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and elsewhere.

It also infuriated charities, who pointed out that the authorities had dismantled 65 such camps in Paris over the past five years, only for new ones to spring up on each occasion. Officials retorted that some charities encouraged migrants to set up camps on pavements in the capital, in the knowledge that they would then be taken to shelters.
