Schools in England will not reopen before March 8

Schools in England will not reopen until March 8 at the earliest, Boris Johnson has said, insisting that it is right to “buy the extra weeks we need” to vaccinate the most vulnerable.

The prime minister said the country remained in a “perilous situation”, adding that it was still too unclear how the vaccination programme would alter the course of the pandemic.

He also confirmed that British citizens and residents arriving from 22 “high-risk” countries including Portugal, Brazil and South Africa would be required to isolate at hotels.

In a statement to the Commons Mr Johnson said that it would not be possible to reopen schools after the February half-term break, having suggested earlier this month that it would be.
